Communications Associate

Urban Movement Labs is a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership with the goal of making Los Angeles the transportation innovation capital of the world. A collaboration between local government and mobility innovators, Urban Movement Labs is a 501c(3) not-for-profit organization where new transportation technologies are tested, proven, and brought to life.

Urban Movement Labs seeks an enthusiastic Communications Associate to join our growing team, tasked with developing and spreading our brand, building our community of passionate transportation change makers, and ensuring Urban Movement Labs is part of the local and national conversation about transportation technology and public private partnerships. 

Position description

The Communications Associate will be a detail-oriented project manager who can juggle multiple projects, deadlines, and timelines without dropping the ball. They have experience producing, posting, and evaluating social media content and engaging with a digital community. The ideal associate must be an exceptional writer with an interest in the subject matter of technology startups, transportation, public policy, cities, and governance. They are aware of the latest trends and topics on these issues and can come up with unique ideas for UML to engage our community interested in transportation technology with that information on our website, newsletter, and through events. They are dependable team players who can stay on top of their regular duties, but also enterprising and creative who can offer up new ideas or content strategy.

The role and responsibilities

The Communications Associate will be connected to and sharing the multi-faceted work of our many partners, pilot projects, and programs. The Associate will lead projects with minimal oversight and this position features significant freedom and responsibility. The role offers valuable hands-on experience with room to advance and the opportunity to shape the direction of this growing organization. The Communications Associate will have the following core responsibilities:

  • Develop and oversee our online event series, including securing speakers, managing logistics and registration, and developing ideas for new events topics;
  • Manage our website (WordPress) and refine content;
  • Draft and edit a regular newsletter on our issues and send them out using MailChimp
  • Execute social media strategy and manage social media content day-to-day. This includes posting and scheduling content, and evaluating analytics to inform future strategy;
  • Develop, write, edit, and sometimes help design or lay out reports, white papers, or grant applications, and then help manage those public releases;
  • Conceive and help produce visualizations that tell compelling stories.
  • Develop & maintain relationships with media, other reporters, and bloggers;
  • Help build and hone the organization’s brand and overall message

Required skills and qualifications

The candidate should have experience managing social media, working in Wordpress, and managing public facing events. Candidates should have some proficiency using a constituent relationship management database (we use Hubspot) and with issue-based, digital advocacy. A demonstrated interest in urbanism, technology, economic development, transportation, or related areas is essential; experience with Adobe Creative Suite and an interest in layout and design is a plus. The ideal candidate will have at least 1 to 3 years of related experience.

Compensation and location

This position is located in Los Angeles, CA. However as staff are currently working remotely on an indefinite basis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the person filling this position can live anywhere in the United States during the remote working period.  Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include unlimited paid vacation and sick leave.
